What is a self-regulatory organisation (SRO)?
How is a self-regulatory system structured?
What are the characterists of a self-regulatory organisation?
it is an independent body, i.e. independent of government and of specific interest groups, and has its own decision-making function;
it is a body set up and funded by the advertising industry;
it has practical responsibility for regulating advertising;
it has the power to enforce its decisions, i.e. the moral and practical support of the advertising industry;
it can rely on sufficient support from the constituent parts of the advertising industry (or, in the case of a sectoral SRO, enough of the sector for which it is responsible) to ensure its credibility
it is impartial;
it deals with consumer complaints on a cost-free basis;
its decision-making processes and adjudications are transparent.
If the industry funds the SRO how can it be independent?
